Easy ways to prevent this from happening include locking the doors and closing garage doors and windows.
The rise in residential break-ins happens simply because robbers know people have been shopping for those high-priced electronics and clothes.
"They know that you've been purchasing for Christmas, so from now until Christmas, we'll see a pretty steady business of break-ins because they know you guys are out there buying stuff," explains 1st Alarm owner Turner Cariker. "And they know you're going to be traveling also."
Another way thieves know you've been shopping is the box from those big-screen TVs and laptops being thrown away in your front yard. Make sure you throw those away in a recycling center
