New Texas Secretary of State Named

"His leadership over our state's elections process, economic development efforts and international relations will be an integral part of Texas' goal to expand economic prosperity and opportunity for all Texans," Gov. Rick Perry said in a prepared statement.

Steen, a past chairman of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, was most recently a board member of the Texas Public Safety Commission. His job will entail overseeing elections throughout the state and activing as Perry's liasion to Mexico.

In a prepared statement, Steen said that serving the state "is an extraordinary privilege, and I look forward to promoting the Texas success story to create more economic opportunities for our citizens and continuing to work with our neighbor, Mexico, toward a prosperous future."

The governor's office announced Tuesday that John T. Steen Jr., a lawyer from San Antonio, will be the new Texas secretary of state. He is replacing Hope Andrade, who resigned Friday from the post. The appointment takes effect Tuesday.
