For years, learning news of esophageal cancer has been a hard pill to swallow, that is until now, and Dr. Patel looks forward to not delivering that news as often.

"The whole point of this procedure is to prevent another procedure. Esophageal cancer is the leading cancer of the next generation", says Dr. Patel.

Those suffering from the side effects of acid reflux, which doctors say, make up nearly 50% of the population, can now ease their minds, and throats, with preventative measures.

"Any person that has had some heartburn or experiences daily heartburn, those are the people who should have a screening test done first", Dr. Patel explains.

Burning off layers of damaged tissue, the Halo machine has been a miracle for some.

"This procedure takes the risk away of developing cancer. So people would still have the acid reflux and have to be on medication, but we are eliminating the risk of developing cancer", Dr. Patel tells us.

The operating room can now represent a proactive approach to new beginnings, rather than reacting to tragic news.

So far, only eight patients have undergone the "Halo" surgery, but with potentially devastating side effects from the common acid reflux problem, doctors are expecting several more appointments.
