Drive-In Theater's Future in Jeopardy; Dozens Turn Up To Raise Funds

Will Abilene's Town & Country Drive-in Theater go digital -- or dark?

Dozens of people gathered at the theater off Vogel St. Saturday night to help the community staple raise money so it can convert from using 35 mm film to the digital formats of films motion picture studios are now sending over.

Local vendors set up shop to sell all sorts of goods, from cupcakes and candy to home decor and jewelry. The theater also played a double-feature to draw in a crowd.

Theater officials said they need about $200,000 for the conversion, which includes new projectors and installation costs.

"Right now, we're just at a fraction of that and we're hoping this event really gets the ball rolling so the community knows we need their help," said Melissa Green, the communication's director for the theater.

They hope to have more fundraisers in the coming weeks and are also looking for any volunteers to help out.

The drive-in theater has until early next year to convert or it will be forced to shut its doors.
