Zombies Invade Buffalo Gap

Saturday provided the perfect weather for a zombie apocalypse to take over Buffalo Gap.

The Zombie 5k and fun run Survival Fest kicked off Saturday afternoon, with about 800 runners racing for their lives as dozens of volunteers dressed as zombies invaded the historic village.

Event organizers said the goal was to show people how to prepare for emergencies while having a good time.

"It's a way to teach emergency preparedness, whether it be for a zombie apocalypse, or a tornado or flood," said Heather Reed, the site manager for Buffalo Gap Historic Village. "And it's just a fun way to get everybody out and active."

Local fire, health department and Red Cross workers even took part in the event, setting up booths to explain how to be prepared.

After the race, runners and families enjoyed food and music from the band Callahan Divide.
