City Council to Vote on Metal Law

By: Katie Thompson
Updated: December 3, 2012
The Abilene City Council is planning to vote on a proposed ordinance that would tighten regulations for metal yards and precious metal sellers.

The measure was tabled at an October meeting to allow business owners and city staff to make minor changes.

Police say a big problem catching burglars who steal copper, brass and other metals is the ability of the criminal to sell to a salvage business in a matter of minutes.

But, business owners say the proposal doesn't address the problem of repeat offenders.

A public hearing and vote is scheduled for this Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at Abilene City Hall.
