Soto, 29, combined to hit .198 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI in 97 games for Chicago-NL and Texas in 2012. He was acquired by the Rangers in a July 31 trade with the Cubs and started behind the plate for 41 of the club's final 59 regular season contests. The Rangers were 26-15 in his starts at catcher. He also caught the final 9 starts by Texas right-hander Yu Darvish, including the lone postseason game. Soto threw out 4 of the last 10 attempted basestealers to end the season.
The Puerto Rico native has a career .248 average over 602 major league games with Chicago-NL and Texas. He was the 2008 National League Rookie of the Year, becoming the first-ever N.L. rookie catcher to start an All-Star Game that season.
With the signing of Soto, the Rangers now have 37 players on the club's 40-man roster.
