ABILENE - Seven members of the 2012 Abilene Christian softball team - Madison Buckley, Brianna Fowlkes, Shelby Hall, Peyton Mosley, Ashley Nolan, Kara Stutesman and Sara Vaughn - have been tabbed as 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athletes.

The award is bestowed upon any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2011-12 academic year. The honor marks the second component of the Association's academic award program. Back in late October the squads with the highest GPAs in each membership category were recognized as 2012 NFCA Top Ten All-Academic Teams.

ACU finished 2011-12 with a team GPA of 3.11 and featured 12 players with a 3.0 or better. Vaughn finished her first year as a Wildcat with a perfect 4.0, while pitchers Hall and Mosley were honored last spring with spots on the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team.

The Wildcats begin their 2013 campaign the weekend of Feb. 1 at the St. Mary's Spring Invitational in San Antonio. ACU also received an invitation to compete at this winter's NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic, which takes place in Tucson, Ariz., from Feb. 15-17.

ACU's home opener at Poly Wells Field is the Whitten Inn Classic, which will feature teams from Eastern New Mexico, Colorado State-Pueblo and Central Oklahoma playing here from Feb. 8-10.

The Wildcats close tournament play at the Midwestern State Classic in early March and begin their Lone Star Conference season March 8-9 at home vs. Incarnate Word. The LSC Championship tournament takes place in Canyon May 3-5 and will be followed by NCAA Regionals (May 9-11), Super Regionals (May 17-18) and Championships (May 23-27). The NCAAs eight best teams will meet this spring in Salem, Va.

ACU won 30 games last season, which reached its conclusion in a third-round elimination game at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships. The Wildcats return eight starters, including all three starting pitchers as well as all-region centerfielder Keanna Winkfield.
