Strong Second Half Lifts Cowboys To Victory

ABILENE, Texas  - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team used a strong second-half surge to beat Mississippi College 76-64 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Monday night.
 
The Cowboys used a 15-1 run from the 8:36 mark of the first half to the 4:54 mark to take its biggest lead of the half at 27-15. Five different players scored in the run for the Cowboys. MC used a 10-0 run to close the half and HSU led 31-30 at the intermission.
 
MC had a strong run in the second half and took its biggest lead of the game at 54-45 on a Laquavius Cotton steal and dunk at the 11:58 mark.
 
HSU then stepped up the defensive intensity and went on a 21-2 run over the next 6:07 to take a 67-56 lead. Eric Taylor, George Nelson and Titus Mims had 3-pointers in the run for the Cowboys. MC never cut the Cowboy deficit below eight points the rest of the way.
 
HSU had four players score in double figures. Mims led the way with 18 points, Taylor added 15 points, Nelson had 12 points and 14 rebounds and Darius Singletary had 12 points and eight rebounds.
 
Laquavius Cotton had 14 points off the bench to pace MC and Turmonte Ragland and Lakin Ford each had 13 points.
 
The Cowboys are now 6-2 on the year and 5-1 in ASC West play. MC fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 on the year. HSU will play at Southwestern on Thursday at 2 p.m. to close out the first semester.
