Memorials and vigils are being set up all over the country, and the key city is no different.

In an effort to show our citywide support for the Sandy Hook community, the mayor of Abilene has declared Wednesday a day of remembrance.

To honor the victims and their families, the mayor hosted a brief prayer and reflection at the Abilene Civic Center lobby at noon.

The ceremony was open to the public.

Also, two Abilene women are planning a vigil for Wednesday night to honor the 26 killed in the shooting Friday.

There will be a balloon release, along with pictures and a memorial set up for people to leave flowers.

The organizers of the vigil say they hope to bring the community together while honoring the vicitims, with the main focus being on the 26 candles that will represent them.

The vigil will be Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oscar Rose Park.

There will be candles, but if you have your own, it is encouraged that you bring those.
