Abilene City Council to Discuss Swimming Pools, Rifles

By: Katie Thompson
Updated: December 19, 2012
A proposal in Abilene's City Council could allow more commercial swimming pools.

Many local subdivisions were constructed with neighborhood swimming pools. However, over time, many of them have become unmaintained and unused.

The city's planning and zoning commission already approved the plan that would allow neighborhood swimming pools to be converted for commercial use.

The item is up for discussion at Thursday's city council meeting.

A public hearing will also be scheduled before the council has a final vote.

The council will also consider purchasing 112 new rifles for the Abilene Police Department.

The purchase will cost the city at least $90,000, but will ultimately be paid back by the officers via payroll deduction over 24 bi-weekly periods.

The program upgrade is modeled after one implemented by the city of San Angelo.
