(WCNC) Most of us like getting things for our birthdays. But on his birthday, Mike Griffin is giving.

"We saw the Connecticut thing happen, and it's my 40th birthday so we decided that there was no better way to celebrate the birthday than do 40 random acts of kindness," he said.

Wife Carrie helped with planning and the couple's two youngest-Wynn and Candler-are the perfect little elves.

Carrie explained, "We started off the day taking breakfast to our kids' schools and there were some policeman so we gave them gift cards," Carrie said.  "We took lunch to the people helping build our house we went and sang at a nursing home."

They taped quarters to the mall vending machine. They bought gift cards for people in line at Starbucks.
