The recent shootings in Connecticut, the online threat right here in the Big Country and even the end of the world hysteria has many local parents on high alert, but we do want to remind you that schools are usually the safest place for a child.

According to the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice, school violence has been in a steep decline since 1990.

A report found 83 percent of public schools reported no serious violent crime.

Only 13 percent of public schools reported at least one violent incident to the police.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, school violence in the
US reached a peak in 1993.

In relation to the recent arrest of a juvenile in connection with some online threats against Abilene area schools, Chief of Police Stan Standridge expressed hope that parents were encouraged by the additional police presence at all campuses.

Standridge says the measures will remain in place throughout the week, thus ensuring an officer on every campus.
