Police Release Statement Regarding Chase of Suspicious Subject from Abilene High

The following is a statement from APD regarding a foot chase that began at Abilene High:

"At 2:50 p.m. on December 20, the School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to Abilene High School was alerted to an individual who was on campus and acting suspiciously among vehicles parked at Abilene High.

He was first contacted by a school official, who in turn notified the SRO. When Officer Jason Aulerich tried to contact the suspect, the suspect fled on foot.

After a foot pursuit, the suspect was apprehended.

Th suspect, a former AHS student, had been warned of criminal trespassing upon his separation from AHS. Today Watkins was arrested for criminal trespassing, evading detention and a local misdemeanor warrant for violation of the education code.

This was a routine arrest that was not associated with any of the recent investigations concerning school violence.

No evidence exists to suggest there was any intent other than to visit with another student.

The Police Department continues to investigate all crimes associated with our school campuses.

We are working to ensure these campuses are safe. I want to reassure our parents that officers will be on all campuses during the school day on Friday.

The Police Department has identified no credible threats toward any campus, and all known rumors have been fully investigated.
