The Slient Killer

"Carbon monoxide is heavier than air so it'll hold low to the ground," explains AFD public education officer Jay Sanders. "So when you go to bed at night, you'll wake up and you'll feel sick because you've been sleeping in it all night."

What can you do to ensure it doesn't happen to you?

"One thing we encourage people to do if they have a gas appliance of any sort, whether it be a water heater, stove or furnace, whatever it may be, we encourage them to have a CO detector," says Sanders.

The process of buying a carbon monoxide detector can be a bit overwhelming. There's a lot of choices to choose from and how do you know what's best for you and your family?

Some are multipurpose.

"It actually will detect those smoldering fires, heat fires, it also detects carbon monoxide," says David Morris, Home Depot employee. "You get the features and benefits of all different types of detectors in one unit."

Others are simple and straight forward.

"A battery powered one with the new lithium batteries will protect your home and your family regardless of whether the power is on or not," says Morris.

Either way, the point is simple.

"It's best just to be protected. It's a very inexpensive fix compared to the consequences of what can happen," he says.

If your CO detector happens to go off.

"You want to get out, go outside, call 911 immediately and we'll come over and check the air for you. But make sure you leave it closed up," says Sanders.

It's a small price to pay for peace of mind.
