SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity's women's
basketball team got hot from long range and surged by Hardin-Simmons, 69-61, in
the Trinity Holiday Classic Friday afternoon at Sams Gym in San Antonio.
Neither team led by more than five points in a first
half that featured four ties and four lead changes. Trinity led at halftime
29-28.
HSU went on a quick 6-1 run out of halftime and led
34-30. Trinity battled back and took a 44-40 lead. Coco Cartwright then buried a
3-pointer and a layup on consecutive trips and then Alexis Popelar made a layup
to give HSU a 47-44 lead with 7:35 to play.
Then the Tigers exploded with four 3-pointers and a
3-point play over the next six trips to take a
59-49 lead with 4:20 to play. Anne Waidelich had the
three-point play and then back-to-back 3-pointers to open up the game.
HSU cut the deficit to 61-58 with 2:12 to play but could
get no closer.
Cartwright led the
Cowgirls with a season-high 21 points. She hit 9-of-13 shots from the field and
3-of-6 from 3-point range. Popelar had 10 points for the Cowgirls.
Murphy Burns led Trinity with 23 points and she hit four
3-pointers. Waidelich had 16 points and Anecia Richardson added 11 points for
Trinity.
The Cowgirls are now 5-6 on the year and Trinity
improved to 6-3. HSU will play Bethel (minn.) on Sunday at noon in the final
game of the Trinity Classic.
