Abilene Horse Cutting Circuit

By: Liz Gonzales
Updated: December 30, 2012
Nearly 1,000 riders took part in competition that is seen as a dance between the horse and cow. The event was open to riders of all levels, ranging from amateur to professional. Although it's now a sport, it actually originated in ranches in the American West, when the purpose of the separation was to vaccinate, brand or castrate the cow.

"You never know when a cow is gonna work good for you or not. So you know, day to day, you never know who's going to win, there's just so many different variables to it, that anything can happen," says participant Kara Nielsen.

The four day event ends Monday evening at the Expo Center.
