Volunteers are plenteous during the holiday season, but when the new year rolls around, it becomes a different story.

"We see our largest amount of volunteers from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Then January comes around and that decreases tremendously," says Lindsey Trook.

The Salvation Army says they have the largest need for volunteers in their kitchen and in their family store.

Trook says, "When we don't have them, we see where it starts to stack up and we get a little bit further behind just because we don't have the hands that we need."

More hands, equals more help, which is crucial for many of these organizations.

Meals on Wheels Plus, Inc. is missing many of their volunteers because they are either college students who are away for winter break, or regular volunteers who just can't make it out because of inclement weather.

"Many of our volunteers are older an don't like to get out when it's cold and especially if it's icy or there's snow on the ground. So there's a great need for volunteers during the winter months," Betty Bradley explains.

When times get rough, these organizations are forced to make a decision they would rather avoid.

Bradley adds, "If we don't have enough volunteers I have to send staff, and that's a pretty expensive volunteer and it's keeping them from doing their regular job."

So this new year, you may consider crossing off your traditional resolution, and replacing it with something you can do to help your community, year round.
