McM Women's Basketball Takes on Heartland Leader

Updated: January 4, 2013
AUSTIN, Texas - Having completed its slate of non-conference games for the 2012-13 season, McMurry University's women's basketball team will resume competition versus Heartland Conference foes on Saturday when it travels to St. Edward's University. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. as the front end of a women's-men's doubleheader versus the Hilltoppers.

The War Hawks (4-8) will be playing their 12th road game in 13 outings this year.

St. Edward's women's team has rolled up an 8-4 overall record and sits atop the Heartland Conference standings at 2-0. The Hilltoppers and McM have both played Arkansas Fort Smith and Newman University in their early pair of HC bouts. The War Hawks lost to Newman on a last-second basket and defeated UAFS.

SEU has won five of its last six outings. A five-game win skein was snapped in a loss to Abilene Christian last Saturday.

The Hilltoppers are led in scoring by Dawn Kiel's 15.7 points per game.  Erika Rousculp, the defending Heartland Conference "Player of the Week," averages 9.0 points and a team-leading 8.3 rebounds per game.  Maddie Wheeler is the only other Hilltopper with a double-digit scoring average at 13.9 p.p.g.

McMurry is coming off of a two-game road trip to Arkansas last week, splitting the pair. McM thrashed Southern Arkansas University last Saturday, before dropping a New Year's Eve day game in overtime at Henderson State University.

Junior forward Keshia Collins tops the team with a 12.9 p.p.g. scoring average (the only player averaging double digits). Collins led the team in scoring in both games in Arkansas, posting 25 versus Southern Arkansas and 17 at HSU.  She also averages 6.3 rebounds per game and is shooting better than 81 percent (35-43) from the free throw line.

Senior point guard Rikeita Thomas checks in at 8.4 points and 2.6 boards per game. Thomas had 11 points against Henderson State and gave off a season-best six assists at SAU.

Sophomore post player Bridget Dorn amassed 20 rebounds and four blocked shots in the pair of games last week. On the year, she is averaging 4.3 p.p.g. and 7.0 r.p.g.

Freshman Claire Bruffey has come off the bench in all 12 games to contribute 6.5 points per contest as McM head coach Veronica Snow's "Sixth Player."

Both the women's and men's games from St. Edward's will be carried live on the stations of the War Hawk Radio Network and can be heard live in the Abilene area on KZQQ 1560-AM. Kit Kimbrell and David Bacon call the action.
