Cowgirls Close Crossover Play With Win At LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, Texas  -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team got back in the win column with a hard fought 66-62 American Southwest Conference win over LeTourneau on Saturday afternoon at Solheim Arena in Longview.
 
The win closed out play against ASC East teams and HSU improved to 4-3 in league play and 6-7 overall. LeTourneau fell to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in ASC action.
 
The game featured 48 fouls by the two teams and a combined 63 free throws. HSU was 24-of-32 at the line to help provide the difference in the victory.
 
The first half featured 11 ties and nine lead changes and neither team led by more than four points in the half. The Cowgirls took a 34-32 lead into the halftime break.
 
The Yellowjackets started the second half on a 11-3 run and took its biggest lead of the game at 43-37 with 16:31 to play. HSU responded with eight straight points by Coco Cartwright and two by Alexis Popelar to tie the game at 47 with 13:13 to play.
 
The Cowgirls then took the lead at 56-53 on a Taylor Rose 3-pointer and led the rest of the way.
 
Popelar had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Coco Cartwright added 12 points. Freshman Alicia Finn had eight points and five rebounds in her most significant action of the season.
 
Alexis Wighaman and Ashely Stephens each had 13 points for LeTourneau and Andrea Ashley had 11 points before fouling out.
 
HSU will hit the road next week for games at Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor.
