Police and Local Shelter Team up to Lower Pedestrian Deaths

The Abilene Police Department is hoping bright reflective vests could be the answer to unseen pedestrians on the busy road.

Thursday morning's deadly accident is one of three in the past two years in that same stretch of road.

We spoke with Love and Care Ministries about their efforts to collect vests and distribute them to homeless people.

"We're hoping that within the next couple weeks we'll have as many as we need. There's a lot of  homeless in our community, people just don't know they're homeless or see them, so we're gonna need way more vests than fifty", says Mark Hewitt, of Love and Care Ministries.

At this point a local business has donated dozens of the bright vests, and APD has also collected several as well. Hewitt estimates about 300 homeless people in Abilene.
