This is a scene that will forever be etched in Joshua Steed's memory.
Steed explains, "There's no reason Jacob and I should be here today."
In September 2011, a man walked into the office of the Mesquite Square Apartments, where Josh worked and shot his coworker, Jacob Allen, in the head. That is when Josh immediately sprung into action, grabbing a chair and hitting the gunman.
He says, "Even though people call me the hero, how heroic Jacob is as well, and how he persevered and how he didn't let fear overcome him and didn't let fear slow him down."
To honor his friend, Joshua decided to establish the Jacob B. Allen Scholarship.
"I wanted to do something to honor him and to honor how faithful god had been to us throughout the whole thing. How he protected us and healed us, and the only way I could think about doing that was by starting a scholarship that would stay at Hardin-Simmons for years to come," says Steed.
The Jacob B. Allen Scholarship will be awarded to a Hardin-Simmons student who has gone through a life challenge and persevered, just like Jacob did.
Steed explains, "I want people to be able to look at the scholarship, especially the recipients of it and feel like there is someone in the past that's been through something that they're going through. That's been through a hard time and that has persevered and made better out of the situation."
Just last month, Jacob and Joshua spent Christmas together, which is when Josh revealed the scholarship, which had been kept a secret.
"He was really emotional and shocked and I think really thankful and it was just a really good time for our families to have one more thing to bring closure to the whole situation," he says.
Not just closure, but an opportunity to turn a negative situation into a positive second chance.
