AMARILLO, Texas  -- Hardin-Simmons' senior defensive back Jay Wise won the 44th annual Blair Cherry Award that is presented to a standout college football player who attended an Amarillo high school.

Wise was an all-ASC defensive back that had his season cut short by a knee injury. He led the ASC in interceptions per game and led HSU with five picks. He finished his career third in HSU history with 12 interceptions and also third with 32 pass break ups. He played his high school ball at Amarillo High.

The Blair Cherry Award is named after former Amarillo High coach Blair Cherry, the only coach in Texas history to win a high school state championship and a Southwestern Conference championship. Cherry had an 84-5 record and won three straight state championships at Amarillo High from 1934-36 and won the SWC title coaching at the University of Texas in 1950.

"I don't even have words for it," Wise said of the honor. "That it's an award to cap my career says it all. All that hard work and dedication, I guess, paid off."

Wise is the third Cowboy to win the prestigious award joining Travis Jones in 2000 and Matt Epperson in 2004.
