Abilene's City Council honored dedicated first responders Thursday, as well as approving a few projects that should help the Abilene community..

The council handed out employee service awards to three firefighters and one police investigator who, together, have over 120 years of service.

The city council also made changes to allow more public swimming pools.

The council approved a decision that could change the way neighborhood pools are used and managed.

The issue is that many local subdivisions are constructed with neighborhood swimming pools, however, over time, many of them go unmaintained and unused.

The city's new plan will allow neighborhood swimming pools to be converted for commercial use.

Also Thursday, the council passed a proposal authorizing runway re-design at Abilene Regional Airport.

The project was supposed to be approved last year, however, there was insufficient funding.

The airport says now that the FAA has changed a number of regulations, they're able to cut the cost.
