APD Releases Name of Victim in Deadly Pedestrian Accident

On Thursday, January 10 at 6:40 p.m., officers of the Abilene Police Department's patrol and traffic divisions responded to a call of a major motor vehicle collision in the 400 block of Sayles Boulevard.

The original call indicated that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian in the roadway at this location.

Upon arrival of emergency personnel, it was discovered that a brown 1986 Chevrolet truck driven by Gabriel Borrego, 71, of Abilene, was traveling north in the inside lane of Sayles Boulevard when he struck a pedestrian in the roadway.

The pedestrian was wearing dark colored clothing and was not seen by the driver of the truck prior to the collision.

The pedestrian was identified as Zachery Joseph Melton, 32, of Abilene. Mr. Melton died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace A.L. Deatherage at 6:55 p.m. Next of kin was notified. Mr. Borrego was not injured.

Alcohol was present at the scene, but at this time, it is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor in the collision. Blood samples were taken from Mr. Borrego and Mr. Melton.

The investigation is on-going, and more information may be released at a later date as it becomes available.

No criminal charges have been filed pending further investigation.
