Flu Forces Elimination of Communion Cup Until Threat of Illness Subsides

By: Press Release
Updated: January 11, 2013
The following is a letter from Bishop Pfeifer to priests of the Diocese of San Angelo requesting that certain precautions be taken during mass to prevent the spread of flu:

          "Dear Brother Priests:
After medical consultation, and to protect the health of all of our people, I am requesting that we suspend the use of the Communion Cup at all masses in the diocese effective Friday, January 11,2013 until further notice. I make this prudential decision based on the fact of the high increase of the cases of flu at this time of the year. Also, as a health precaution, I recommend that we not offer the sign of peace with a handshake. It is best that the exchange of peace be given verbally and perhaps with a simple bow. Once the danger of transmitting the flu has lessened, I will restore the use of the Communion Cup. Please pass this information on to all of our people.

Bishop Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI"
