Big Shot! Davis Breaks Indoor Record in First Competition of 2013

By: McMurry Athletics
Updated: January 12, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas - McMurry junior Paul Davis got the 2013 track and field season off on the right foot for the War Hawks, breaking the school indoor shot put record at the Texas Tech Open. Davis' heave of 59' 10 " surpassed his own McM mark (59' 7 ") set last season at the University of Arkansas.

Davis earned first place honors in the shot put, out-distancing the runner-up from Texas Tech by better than 19 inches. Davis' effort was even more astounding considering he competed with a strained gluteus muscle and only managed to take three throws.

Davis is coming off of 2012 campaign in which he was an NCAA Division III indoor All-American, and followed that with an outdoor national championship in the shot last May. The McM team was also the 2012 NCAA III outdoor national champions.

McMurry sophomore Jajuan Austin was the War Hawk's only other competitor in the early-season meet, placing a creditable fourth place in the high jump. Austin's best mark of the day was 6' 8".

The event was a bit of a homecoming for both Austin and Davis, who both hail from Lubbock and attended Coronado High School.
