Truck load after truck load leaves McCoy's Building Supply, as they continue with a busy rush.

"It's as busy as I've seen it," said Mike Hall, a commercial sales representative. "I've been doing it 23 years, and 2012 was the best year I've ever had."

The recent oil boom in Midland and Odessa has caused a spike in home construction. And because of that, McCoy's in Abilene is seeing a boom is business as well.

"Anywhere from starter homes , homes that are 14-1500 square feet to 3000 square foot homes in Abilene. Most of the homes in the Midland-Odessa that we're seeing, that we're supplying the lumber on are 7000 square foot and better," Mike explained.

The number of houses being built continues to grow, causing a demand for more builders and creating more job opportunities for people in the Big Country. And creating more business opportunities for building supply stores.

"It's just that you have a lot of loyalty from the customers and from the builders here in Abilene. We have builder that buys from us in the Midland-Odessa area," said Mike.

To stay competitive with Midland and Odessa, McCoy's is paying their employees almost double of what they'd make in that area. But it doesn't just create jobs, it stimulates the economy.

"So you've got people from this area going out there working, but still having Abilene and the Big Country as their home base where they live at," Mike said. "So what they're making up there, they're bringing back and spending here."
