VFW Honors AHS Government Teacher

For the second straight year, an Abilene High School government teacher has been selected as the best high school teacher in Texas by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Jenny Miller, who has taught Government and AP Government at AHS for 27 years, has been chosen as the VFW's "National Citizenship Education Teacher" for the state of Texas.

She will officially receive the award during at the VFW state convention Feb. 2 in Austin.

Miller was first selected as the local VFW Post 6873 honoree and subsequently selected as the district and state representative.

In selecting Miller for the award, VFW representatives cited her civic responsibility and outstanding patriotism. The group stated that Miller's in-class projects, guest speakers and class field trips develop her students to have a better understanding of democratic values and beliefs.

In addition to her teaching duties, Miller is sponsor for the AP Government Club and the Senior Class. Among her numerous volunteer efforts and projects, Miller leads her AP Government classes in a voter's registration drive each year.

She also helped with the Poppy Campaign, a student drive to raise donations for needy families during Christmas, among other volunteer projects
