Cowboys Rally For Win In Carse's 600th Game

ABILENE, Texas  - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team rallied to beat Sul Ross State 84-78 on Thursday evening in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.
 
The Cowboys opened the game with a 3-pointer by John Derr for their only lead of the first and never led again until Bernard Stiggers hit a pair of free throws with 2:19 to play in the game to give HSU a 76-74 lead.
 
Sul Ross State pushed the first half lead up to 10 points at 27-17 with 12:16 to play. The Cowboys chipped away and eventually tied the game at 38 with 4:21 remaining in the half. However, SRSU scored the next six points and eventually led 47-42 at halftime.
 
In the second half, the Lobos never led by more than six points and that was the margin at 66-60 when the Cowboys started to make their run. HSU went on a quick 8-2 run to tie the game at 68 with 5:32 to play.
 
The Lobos scored the next four points to take a 74-70 lead with 4:17 to play and HSU countered with a 13-0 run to take the game. In the run, Holland had four points, Stiggers had four points and Darius Singletary had the final five points.
 
Eric Taylor had a big night for the Cowboys with 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Holland had a career-best 19 points and eight rebounds, Derr hit five 3-pointers for 15 points, Singletary had 11 points and Andy Spears added 10.
 
Mychal Pinson led the Lobos with 24 points, including a 6-for-10 effort from 3-point range. Justin Weldon contributed 13 points and Carlos Montiel had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
 
HSU forced 21 turnovers and had a 20-6 advantage in points off turnovers and a 18-2 advantage in fast break points.
 
The game was the 600th career game for head coach Craig Carse.
 
The Cowboys improved to 10-5 on the year and 7-3 in the ASC. Sul Ross State fell to 4-13 overall and 3-8 in ASC play. HSU returns to action on Saturday at Baylor on Fox Sports Southwest at 2 p.m.
