Heartland Leader Awaits McMurry Women

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The
McMurry women's basketball team will conclude its two-game road trip on
Saturday afternoon with one of its toughest challenges of the season
when it faces Heartland Conference leader St. Mary's University at 2
p.m.
The game - as well as the men's contest following at 4 p.m. - can be heard live in the Abilene area on KZQQ 1560-AM, as well as on all of the stations of the War Hawk Radio Network. The War Hawks (6-9) will be playing their 14th game of the season away from their home floor (out of what will be 16 contests, thus far, in 2012-13). McM is coming off of a 59-56 win at Texas A&M-International University on Thursday.
In that win, the War Hawks needed a buzzer-beating three-pointer from senior M.J. Vickers to provide the difference. McMurry had blown a 13-point second half lead, before Vickers' shot rescued a victory.
Vickers was made her first start of the year in her seven games with the women's basketball team, following her successful volleyball season in the fall.
Fellow senior Rikeita Thomas led the team with 13 points. Junior Keshia Collins and freshman Claire Bruffey each had 10 points.
Saturday at St. Mary's will be a tough test for the War Hawks, who made the trip minus three of their four post players (all 6-foot or better) due to injury or illness.
The Rattlers are a perfect 6-0 versus Heartland Conference foes and are 13-3 overall. St. Mary's dispatched of St. Edward's University, 63-51, on Thursday evening in what was a battle of the teams unbeaten in league action.
SMU has no less that four players averaging in double-figure scoring, led by Jackie Woods' 13.9 points per game. Morgan Pullins has been her team's "super sub," coming off the Rattlers' bench to contribute 11.8 p.p.g. Lia Kios (10.9 p.p.g.) and Felicia Jacobs (10.6 p.p.g.) round out the SMU scoring leaders.
St. Mary's leads or is at or near the top of the Heartland Conference in most offensive team categories, including scoring offense (72.8 p..p.g./2nd), scoring margin (+11.0/2nd), field goal percentage (.425/1st), three-point field goal percentage (.371/1st) and assist-turnover ratio (+0.8).
The Rattlers also own several top spots among the defensive statistics. SMU is among the leaders in scoring defense (61.8/2nd), field goal defense (.363/1st), three-point defense (.286/3rd), rebound margin (+2.7), steals (12.7/2nd) and turnover margin (+3.33).
The War Hawks are fourth in scoring defense (67.6 p.p.g.), fifth in field goal defense (.389) and second in three-point defense (.266).
Collins' 12.5 p.p.g. scoring average leads McMurry's team on offense. Thomas is at 9.3 p.p.g. and Bruffey 6.3 p.p.g. off the bench
