Cowboys To Play Baylor On Fox Sports Southwest

By: Chad Grubbs, HSU Sports Information
Updated: January 18, 2013
ABILENE, Texas  - Playing a Division I opponent early in the season is not that uncommon for a Division III team, playing a Big 12 team on television in the middle of conference play is a rarity for any Division III team. Hardin-Simmons men's basketball team will get that opportunity on Saturday when it travels to Waco to play Baylor.

"They needed a game between their two Big Monday games, and naturally with the ties between Hardin-Simmons and Baylor it was a nice fit," said HSU head coach Craig Carse. "It will be a challenge for our team, but it will also be a great experience for our guys to play in front of a big crowd, on television, against a Big 12 team. That is something they will remember for their entire life."

The game will be played on Fox Sports South West at 2 p.m. Saturday and locally that is on Channel 416 on Dish Network, 33 on Suddenlink and 676 on Direct TV.

The Cowboys are coming off an 84-78 win over Sul Ross State on Thursday. Eric Taylor had 23 points and eight assists and Jeff Holland added 19 points and eight rebounds in the win for HSU. The Cowboys are 10-5 on the year and Baylor comes into the contest with a record of 11-5.

Baylor leads the all-time series between the two schools 16-12 and have won the last nine meetings. HSU lost 106-45 on Nov. 22, 2009 in the last meeting. John Derr had 10 points in that meeting in his first career game.

Since dropping from Division I status in 1990 the Cowboys are 0-24 all-time against Division I opponents and the closest the Cowboys came to winning a Division I game was in the 2001-02 season when it trailed by three with the ball with one minute to play in a 79-72 loss to North Texas.
