ACU Men Pick Up Crucial Win Over Angelo St.

SAN ANGELO - Freshman T.J. Brown buried the biggest shot of his young career Wednesday night with 75 seconds to play, breaking a 54-54 tie and propelling the ACU Wildcats to a huge 59-56 win over Angelo State at the Junell Center.
Brown took a feed from point guard Eric Lawton and buried a wide-open 3-pointer from the corner to give ACU a 57-54 lead, and one minute later Cornelius Cammock hit a driving, spinning layup with 14.7 seconds to play to push the lead back to 59-54. Lawton's penetration into the game drew three defenders and allowed him to feed the ball to Cammock, who spun to the goal and hit a layup to put his team up by five points.
After Lawton was fouled with 9.3 seconds to play, he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 to give Angelo State a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime. Antonio Dye, though, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Wildcats walked out of the Junell Center for perhaps the last time ever with a win.
The men's victory followed the women's 53-39 win earlier in the night to give ACU its first doubleheader sweep of Angelo State at the Junell Center.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 9-8 overall and 3-6 in the Lone Star Conference, while the Rams fall to 5-12 and 2-7. The Wildcats and Rams will be back in action against each other Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at ACU's Moody Coliseum.
Lawton did it all for the Wildcats in the win, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal in 34 minutes. He had help, though, as the Wildcats' defense kept the Rams from scoring for almost 11 minutes in the second half. ACU out-rebounded the Rams, 39-29, in the game, and that helped the Wildcats limit the Rams' number of shots.
Senior forward Dosh Simms played one of the best games of his career with 13 points and 12 rebounds on 5 of 8 shooting from the field. Cammock finished with 12 points, rebounding with a solid effort after struggling last Saturday in ACU's loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
