Medical Students Donate Blood

Some local medical students had the opportunity to be on the other side of the needle Friday as the Meek bloodmobile set up shop at the Hardin Simmons University campus.

Students at Holland Medical High School hopped on the bus to give blood, and they made up a pretty hefty crowd since the guidlines have changed to allow 16-year-olds to give blood with parental consent.

Chris Sharbutt, a medical student at Holland, said he was eager to give blood because he understands what it can mean for the recipients.

"Since I'm part of Holland and I'm studying medical, I felt it would be good to donate to a medical organization and help them out," Sharbutt explained.

Teachers also participated in the blood drive, but the nurses on board the bloodmobile told us that the students outnumbered the staff today.
