UPDATE: Deadly Accident on Potosi Road Friday Evening

The first calls came in around 8 p.m. Friday evening.  It happened on Texas Highway 36 at Potosi Road, just south of the Abilene Regional Airport. First reports from callers ranged from no injuries, to several people being hurt. Two people in the red truck have died and there were several other serious injuries in this deadly accident. South Taylor County EMS, Metrocare and an air-evac helicopter took the injured to Abilene Hospitals. Highway 36 is still closed and traffic is being rerouted for the investigation and clearing of debris. KTAB News is on the scene and will have more information soon.

Update:

The Department of Public Safety has confirmed the two deaths involved in the accident off Potosi Rd. and Highway 36 Friday evening. One person from the red truck and one from the green truck have been confirmed dead. There were six total people, all A-C-U students, in the green pickup headed down Highway 36 South.

DPS troopers are investigating the cause of the head-on collision.

The six people in the green truck were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, one of them was taken by helicopter.

Update 11:43 p.m.:

The next of kin of the deceased have been notified. The driver of the red pickup truck is 27-year-old Jeffery Davis of Abilene. The passenger in the green pickup truck is ACU student, 20-year-old Lindsey Smith of New Braunfels, Texas.

The families of all of the injured students have not yet been notified so DPS is not releasing those names.
