18-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Wreck

An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a wreck in South Abilene Saturday evening.

The wreck occurred at 8:13 p.m. in the 2400 block of South Treadaway Blvd. 

According to the Abilene Police Department, a Mitsubishi Outlander SUV was heading northbound on S. Treadaway and tried to make a left turn onto Butternut St. when it crashed into a Honda motorcycle traveling south on Treadaway. 

The driver of the motorcycle, 18-year-old Clayton Dowlin Johnson of Abilene, and his passenger, 23-year-old Chelssi Franklin of Abilene, were both thrown about 100 feet from the vehicle, police said.

Both were wearing helmets.

Johnson and Franklin were taken to Hendrick Medical Center in critical condition. 

Johnson later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m.

Franklin remains in critical condition at the hospital. She is being treated for multiple injuries and underwent surgery for a leg fracture. 

The 23-year-old driver of the SUV and her two children, ages 4 and 6, were in uninjured in the wreck.

As part of the investigation, blood samples were taken from the driver of the SUV and from Johnson, police said. There were no witnesses to the crash.

The investigation continues.
