The Abilene Cultural Affairs Council is excited to announce the 2nd Annual Children's Art and Literacy Festival (CALF) featuring "Can You See What I See?" and "I Spy" illustrator Walter Wick!
Early registration opens Friday, February 1. The weekend-long event will be held June 13 - 16 in downtown Abilene. Children and families are invited to join the 2nd annual celebration of children's art and literature.
Festivities begin Thursday, June 13 at 5:00 p.m. for a "Can You See What I See?" themed ArtWalk featuring Seymour. Seymour is Walter Wick's lovable character from his "Can You See What I See?" books. The red and yellow character will lead the way for our Seymour themed costume contest and Seymour's CALF Walk up Cypress Street.
Walter Wick's, Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic will be on display at the NCCIL. At 5:30, festival goers will gather in Everman Park for the unveiling of "Seymour," our newest Abilenian. At 6:30 p.m., illustrator Walter Wick will host an artist talk open to the public at the Historic Paramount Theatre. Mr. Wick will discuss and explore his creative process with visual aids, unique stories, and crowd participation.
Friday and Saturday, families can experience exciting events throughout Abilene. Children can attend six different dramatic readings and collect buttons designed by Mr. Wick. In addition, the Seymour Express will be running in "Storybook Park" where passengers can enjoy Dr. Seuss' six beloved characters, William Joyce's Childhoods Great Adventure and also "spy" several Seymours hidden throughout the park.
This year's festival activities include: performances by magician Lonnie Chevrie, Sonny and his Extraordinary Birds at the Paramount Theatre, and the return of David McCullough, the Balloon Sculptor, as well as Disney's Tangled in the evenings at the Historic Paramount.
A new addition this year, the Abilene Planetarium will host and event where participants can see the beautiful images from his newest book, "Out of this World" projected on the ceiling dome. Tickets for this event are extremely limited.
Other special events include Dad's Sunday Fun Day and another ,"I Spy" experience this time with the animals throughout the zoo.
Walter Wick's photographic tricks have captivated fans of his books, including the "I Spy" and "Can You See What I See?" series. Wick has sold more than 38 million books worldwide. He is best known for brilliant search-and-find photographs, he is the author, creator, and photographer of the "Can You See What I See?" series, as well as the co-creator and photographer of the "I Spy" books. He is also the author and photographer of two award winning science books, "A Drop of Water: A Book of Science and Wonder" and "Walter Wick's Optical Tricks."
The idea for the weekend long festival emanated from the realization that Abilene needed an event that would emphasize families, art, and literacy. In 2012, Abilene had the opportunity to host works by Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss). The exhibition created a unique platform for a downtown festival and the Children's Art & Literacy Festival (CALF) was formed. The festival was a wonderful success and has become an annual event held each June.
