Update: DPS Identifies Other Victims of HWY 36 Deadly Crash

01/30/13 Update

DPS has released the names of the driver and passenger of a GMC pickup who were both victims of the deadly accident that occurred on HWY 36 on Monday, just a few miles west of Cross Plains.

Kevin P. Byrnes, 41, years of age from Midland, Texas was the driver of the 2006 GMC Pickup, accompanied by Brittany Elaine Underwood, 26 years of age from Goldsmith, Texas.

Byrnes was driving north on HWY 36 when the vehicle left the roadway to the right. Byrnes over-corrected attempting to get back on the road, causing him to cross both lanes of traffic, hitting Steven Pickett who was driving southbound head-on.

P    Pickett, Byrnes and Underwood were all pronounced dead at the scene.                                

Th   01/30/13 Update: The Following is a statement sent by DPS confirming the names of the deceased and injured:

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called to the scene of a two vehicle head on crash, Monday at 4:06 p.m. in Callahan County.

The crash occurred on Texas Highway 36 mile marker 330, west of Cross Plains, Texas. Both of the vehicles involved in this crash caught fire. There were two occupants in each vehicle.

One of the deceased is Steven Wayne Pickett, 64, from Cross Plains, Texas  who was the driver of a Ford Pickup. The other two victims who did not survive the crash, the driver and passenger of the second vehicle, have not yet been identified due to the fire.

All three were taken to Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office in Fort Worth, Texas.

William Bryan Partin, 36, Graham, Texas was a passenger in the Ford Pickup and was injured in the crash. He was taken to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene for treatment.

The weather was clear and the roadway was dry and the crash is still being investigated.

1/29/13 Update

DPS has confirmed three deaths as a result of the head-on collision that took place Monday evening on HWY 36 Near Cross Plains.

Both cars caught fire after the crash and both the passenger and driver of one vehicles did not survive. The passenger of the second vehicle did survive, though the driver did not.

DPS is waiting until families of the victims have been notified before releasing the identities of the victims and the details of the crash.

1/28/13 Update

DPS has confirmed that there have been multiple deaths in the head-on collision on HWY 36 about six to 10 miles West of Cross Plains, though no name has been released at this time.

The crash involved two vehicles, a car and a pickup, and both vehicles are in a ditch on the side of the road.

Traffic near the area is being diverted down county roads and north-bound traffic is heavily backed up.

Crash victims were taken via medical helicopter and ambulance, but there are still no updates on how many or the nature of any injuries.

There has been a head-on collision near Cross Plains.

The collision took place just a few miles west of Cross Plains on Highway 36.

A little after 4 p.m., first responders reported that multiple people were trapped and one vehicle was on fire.

Two ambulances and a medical helicopter were sent to assist.
