There are certain things that can trigger the condition, especially around this time of the year. Some people have more issues with asthma in the wintertime because of the colds and the flu virus. If they catch something like that, it can have a stronger effect on them. This is common in people with asthma. Because the asthmatic has airways that are very hyper-sensitive, they're already inflamed, so the virus does more damage in the asthmatic patients than they would do in somebody who doesn't have asthma.

Inflamed and swollen lungs can make it difficult to breathe. To minimize attacks during the winter you should know your triggers. Cold air can exacerbate the condition, as can windy weather. Also, you should stay on long-term control medications. Don't forget indoor irritants too, things like smoke, scented candles and fireplaces. Doctors recommend a flu shot for everybody that has the condition. Good hand-washing and good hygiene is also important for people to remember, especially if they have asthma.
