The driver of one of the vehicles was 64 year old Steven Pickett of Cross Plains.

His passenger was 36 year old William Bryan Partain.

Pickett lost his life in the early afternoon head-on collision, and Partain, who is known in town as Wild Bill, lived and was taken to the hospital in Abilene. It didn't take long to find someone who knew both of the men in Cross Plains.

Both Pickett and Partain were ranchers in Cross Plains. People describe both men as "real cowboys" and say that when something like this happens in a town of just 900 everybody feels it.

During an interview with a local shop owner Partain sent a text message to the owners wife letting them know that he was okay. The two people in the other pick-up have not been identified because of the fire.
