McMurry's Mullin & Baiza to Participate in Football Combine

By: McMurry Athletics
Updated: January 30, 2013
LEESBURG, Va. - Beyond Sports Network has announced the first release of the roster for the 2013 BSN Collegiate Showcase and the list of participants will include former McMurry University football players Jake Mullin (quarterback) and D.J. Baiza (kick returns/defensive back).

The event will take place March 8th through 10th in Akron, Ohio inside the Stile Athletic Field House. Top football players from the FCS, D2, D3, and NAIA will be putting their skills on display for scouts from the NFL, CFL, and AFL. The Showcase is designed to give scouts and executives that ability to scout and evaluate athletes differently than a traditional pro day.

Athletes will participate in a scouting combine, position drills, 1-on-1's, 7-on-7, and an All Star Game.  For the complete roster please visit the following link: http://www.bsncollegiateshowcase.com/2013-roster.html.

Mullin - who finished his career as a War Hawk with every school passing and total offense record to his credit - had the most productive season of his career in the Maroon and White in the 2012 campaign.  Mullin completed 370 of 534 pass attempts (69.3 percent), good for 3,478 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Mullin had a pass efficiency rating of 135.3 and averaged 316.2 yards per game through the air. He was afirst team All-National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) selection at quarterback and second team as a punter. He also earned the NCCAA's national "Player of the Week" award twice during the 2012 season.

Mullin was even more dangerous in the "Air Raid Offense" because of the fact he was also a deft punter that kept opposing defenses guessing. In 20 punt attempts, Mullin averaged 41.5 yards per punt, including a season-long effort of 62 yards. In all, he had seven punts of 50 yards or better.

Baiza was a first team All-NCCAA as a defensive back and a second team pick as a return specialist, as well. Baiza led the War Hawks with four interceptions on the year, averaging 14.8 yards per return on the pilfered passes. Baiza racked up 29 tackles - 22 solo - and topped the club in passes defended (14) and blocked kicks (2).  He also recovered two fumbles.

Baiza's punt return prowess was also recognized, after a year in which he returned 18 punt returns for an average of 20.8 yards per return. He added to his on-going school record for punt return touchdowns, returning two for scores to raise his career total to five punt return TDs. He also returned four kickoffs for an average of 18.5 y.p.r.

The 2013 showcase follows a successful inaugural event last year. Last year's showcase participants received contracts or training camp invites to the National Football League, Canadian Football League, and Arena Football League. A complete list of last year's success stories and videos can be found by visiting the showcase website at www.bsncollegiateshowcase.com.

Following last year's event, a number of participants received contracts from NFL, CFL, and AFL teams. Names like Rico Wallace (Carolina Panthers), Eddy Carmona (Oakland Raiders), Kevin Doty (New York Giants), and Justin Aldredge (New Orleans Saints) attended last year's event.

"We are excited about the second BSN Collegiate Showcase and after seeing our participants sign with 5+ leagues the athletes coming to Akron in 2013 have a lot to look forward to," said Beyond Sports Network CEO, Jimmy Kibble. "This event promises a true showcase for the invited FCS, D2, D3, and NAIA athletes and one last chance to display their football skills to every professional football league."

"Every year BSN has athletes that attend BSN events and have ended up on NFL and CFL rosters, including CFL Grey Cup MVP Chad Kackert. The approach our staff has taken to scout and organize this event, pro teams will most definitely find some diamonds in the rough," said Beyond Sports Network COO, Dan Evans.

Beyond Sports Network is dedicated to providing exposure for small college football players aspiring to reach the professional level. To learn more about the Showcase and read news, updates, and features on all the athletes, proceed to www.bsncollegiateshowcase.com.
