RICHARDSON, Texas  -- Hardin-Simmons' softball team has been picked to finish second in the American Southwest Conference West Division in the preseason poll of head coaches, sports information directors and media.

Mary Hardin-Baylor was picked to repeat as ASC West champions. The Cru received 17 of the 21 first-place votes and had 140 poll points. HSU was second with two first-place votes and 116 points. Howard Payne and Texas Lutheran were tied for third in the poll.

Concordia, Schreiner and Sul Ross State rounded out the ASC West poll. Texas-Tyler, who won the ASC title last season, was picked to repeat in the always tough ASC East.

Katie Poerner of Howard Payne and Rebekah Ragsdale of Mary Hardin-Baylor were named the ASC West preseason player and pitcher of the years.

HSU will open the first season under former Cowgirl all-American Arin Spence-Salas on Feb. 16 at home against Texas-Dallas. The Cowgirls are coming off a 23-17 in 2012 and a 16-8 mark in ASC West action.

The 2013 ASC season - the 15th in league history - begins as early as Feb. 12. The ASC First Pitch Tournament, which features all 14 league teams in cross-divisional, non-conference action, is set for March 1-2 at Oran Good Park in Farmers Branch, Texas. The eight-team, double elimination conference tournament is on tap for April 25-27 also at Oran Good Park with an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship on the line.
