The drive from Brownwood to Brookesmith Elementary takes about 20 minutes.

That means it would take any law enforcement official 20 minutes to reach the school should a tragedy occur.

For this ISD, it's a chance they're not willing to take.

Now the school is moving forward with what they feel are necessary precautions. Several designated employees in each school will carry a handgun and have a concealed handgun license. Furthermore, such employee will be provided additional training in crisis intervention and management of hostage situations.

Although initially it may sound like an extreme measure to take, Superintendent Smith says the past teaches us that the standard isn't enough.

"A locked door won't keep someone out that wants to come in. We feel this gives us at least some ability to keep our children safe, should something like that occur in our district. In conjunction with that at both of our entry ways to the district we are putting up signs that basically alert that Brookesmith ISD does have armed staff and that we will do whatever is necessary to protect our children," says Dr. Jay Smith.

The superintendent says the loaded personnel will not be teachers. Guns will not be in the classroom and will be out of reach of any curious hands.
