ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team saw its six-game winning
streak snapped on Saturday in a 65-58 American Southwest Conference loss to Concordia at the Mabee Complex.
The
Cowgirls scored the first five points of the game on a Joanna Daniel
3-pointer and a Jaclyn von der Heide basket and eventually
led 10-5.
Concordia
took its first lead at 11-10 in a defensive first half. The teams had
four points each over a 7:07 stretch. HSU led the
game 20-15 with 6:00 to play in the first half and the game was tied at
24 with 1:48 to play in the half. The Tornados then outscored the
Cowgirls 12-5 before halftime to take a 36-29 lead.
In
the second half Concordia extended the run by scoring the first nine
points of the half to push the lead out to 45-29 with 17:32
to play.
Alexis
Popelar then took over for the Cowgirls scoring the next 12 HSU points
and melting the deficit down to 46-41 with 11:01 to
play. Concordia again pushed the lead back to 11 but HSU chipped away
again and cut it to 57-53 on a Popelar layup with 4:37 to play, but the
Cowgirls would get no closer.
Popelar led the Cowgirls with 28 points and 14 rebounds, Joanna Daniel scored 12 points and Jaclyn von der Heide had 10 points.
Brianna Smith led a balanced Concordia attack with 15 points and Tyler Compton added 14.
Both teams are now an identical 13-8 overall and 10-5 in ASC play. The Cowgirls will close the regular season with four straight
games on the road, beginning Thursday night at Sul Ross State.
Saturday's
game was the final at the Mabee Complex for the four seniors - Popelar,
Shaquana Wall, Taylor Rose and Coco Cartwright.
