APD: Drunk Driver Hits Stopped Car

Monday morning at about 10:20 a.m., Officer Stan Meiser responded to a theft call at a business in the 4300 block of Buffalo Gap Road. APD dispatch had been notified by a store employee about a male suspect that had fled the store with stolen merchandise. A description of the suspect and a suspect vehicle were provided to APD. The suspect vehicle description would prove valuable in this investigation. Sgt. Aron Bryan worked with the information provided and coordinated an attempt to locate the suspect vehicle. At approximately 10:45 a.m., Officer Duff Phipps had located the suspect vehicle and contacted the driver in the 100 block of Burger Street. The driver was detained and the preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was driving with a suspended license. Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division were requested to assist in the investigation. The driver was arrested for misdemeanor Driving While License Invalid. During a search of the driver, approximately 7.5 grams of medication were located in the driver's possession. The driver did not have a prescription for said medication. The driver was taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning. The driver was also arrested for misdemeanor Possession of a Controlled Substance (Hydrocodone) and the theft investigation continues.
Monday night at about 9:30, Officer Mary Guitar came across a motor vehicle collision in the 3100 block of Southwest Drive. This two-vehicle collision involved a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a male subject and a GMC Yukon driven by a female subject. Both vehicles were stopped at an intersection in the westbound lane. Officer Guitar began her preliminary investigation and contacted the involved parties. Officer Steffen Hartness assisted on the call. Officer Guitar spoke with the driver of the truck who informed her that he had struck the GMC Yukon with his vehicle. During the investigation, Officer Guitar observed that the male driver displayed indicators of intoxication. Officer Guitar also smelled the very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the male driver. The male driver began to conduct standard field sobriety tests, but refused to continue the remainder of the tests. The driver conducted the first test poorly. Officer Guitar also observed an open container of alcohol inside the Chevrolet truck. The driver was arrested and taken to county jail where he provided samples of his breath. Breath samples taken revealed the driver's BAC to be 0.345 and 0.337. The male driver was arrested for misdemeanor DWI (with Accident and Open Container) and he did not report any injuries. The crash investigation revealed that the GMC Yukon was stopped at a traffic light when the Chevrolet pickup truck, traveling westbound, collided into the rear of the GMC. The age-51 female driver in the GMC reported a possible injury and was taken to Hendrick Medical Center by private automobile. There were no other occupants in these involved vehicles.

APD dispatch was notified by a loss prevention employee that a female subject had been detained for alleged theft. Officer Weise's preliminary investigation revealed that the subject had been concealing merchandise in the store and attempted to leave the store without paying for said merchandise. Approximately $152 in stolen merchandise was recovered. A search of the subjects purse revealed a glass pipe that the investigation determined was used for smoking methamphetamine. The subject was arrested for two misdemeanor offenses: Theft and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
