Taylor County Sheriff Speaks Out on Gun Control

Many will argue that the state of Texas and guns go hand in hand. History certainly agrees.

But much has changed since the western days, and recent evens have President Obama and other legislators pushing for more control.

"You have a right to protect yourself and your own property. And if that means you want to own a gun, then by all means own a gun," says Taylor County Sheriff Ricky Bishop.

Bishop has a clear stance when it comes to gun control in west Texas.

"Law enforcement cannot be everywhere. The people have to be able to protect themselves until we can get there to help protect them," said Bishop.

Bishop is among many sheriffs across the state supporting a new bill that would challenge Obama's legislation.

"The biggest thing everybody is worried about is that the federal government is going to come in and start taking away guns. We're not going to let them do that," said Bishop.

If passed, the bill would create a statewide ban on any federal ban of assault weapons or high capacity magazines. It would make it a criminal offense to enforce a gun ban in the state of Texas.

"I swore an oath to the people and to uphold the Texas and United States constitutions," says Bishop. "I'm not going to violate either one of those documents to get guns off the street."

I am glad to hear that Sheriff Bishop is one who is willing to uphold our state and national Constitutions. Pending any unforseen kickers; Sheriff Bishop has just gained my confidence and vote next election.

I hope all sheriffs take the same stand as Bishop. He is a real hero for his stance.

"I swore an oath to the people and to uphold the Texas and United States constitutions," says Bishop. "I'm not going to violate either one of those documents to get guns off the street." I have just had my vote for you confirmed as the right choice!
