ABILENE, Texas - Tresta Donahoo hit a layup with
5.2 seconds to play to fuel Howard Payne to an 86-85 overtime American Southwest
Conference win on Saturday in women's basketball action at the Mabee Complex.
The game featured 12
lead changes and nine ties. Howard Payne led for most of the first half and led
by as many as 12 points. The Lady Jackets took a 48-38 lead into the halftime
locker room.
HSU chipped away at
the deficit and a Jessi Perez jumper pulled the Cowgirls to 54-53 with 13:35 to
play. The Cowgirls took their first lead of the second half on a 3-pointer by
Coco Cartwright with 8:43 to play.
After that, no one led
by more than three points. Donahoo hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to
play to tie the game at 73 and Joanna Daniel then hit a pair of free throws with
:11 to play to give HSU the lead.
Dana Marrs then missed
a 3-pointer with :03 remaining and Blair Stone rebounded for HPU and was fouled
with 0.9 to play and the 46 percent free throw shooter hit a pair of free throws
to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period,
HPU went up 79-76 and Cartwright tied the game with a 3-pointer and Taylor Rose
gave the Cowgirls the lead with a layup with 3:17 to play. HPU then scored five
straight to take an 84-81 lead with 1:59 to play.
Daniel narrowed the
deficit to 84-83 with a pair of Daniel free throws and after a turnover by HPU
Alicia Finn hit a pair of free throws with :12 to play to give HSU a 85-84 lead.
Donahoo then drove in and made a layup and Daniel turned the ball over at the
end before the Cowgirls could get a shot at a game winner.
Alexis Popelar led the
Cowgirls with 26 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out at the end of
regulation. Alicia Finn had 13 points, Taylor Rose had a career-best 12 points
and Jaclyn von der Heide had 11 points.
Donahoo and Dana Marrs
each had 16 points for HPU. Danyel Bradley had 12 points and Senae Dillard and
Blair Stone each had 10 points.
HSU dominated the
rebounds in the game with a 49-34 advantage, including 21 on the offensive end.
The Cowgirls stayed in the game with a 31-for-35 effort at the foul line. Howard
Payne scored 22 points off of 27 HSU turnovers.
HSU is now 13-10 on
the year and 11-6 in conference play. Howard Payne improved to 20-3 on the year
and to 15-2 in ASC play. HSU plays at Texas Lutheran on Thursday.
