Abilene Man Starts Program To Teach Kids About Gun Safety

The sounds of the load, click and the pull of the trigger are quickly becoming more expensive.
"I've seen just for example, for a 22, maybe 500 rounds could be around $70," said Eric Udick, who's hunted since he was a boy.
Ammo that would normally cost you just $15, is up to four times as much.
So Udick has taken the situation into his own hands by stocking up and giving it away.
"I started just donating ammo to people and then I came up with the idea to start the group and just start donating rifles to parents for their kids," said the Abilene resident.
You read right, he's giving ammo and guns away to kids.
You see, Udick grew up with guns, it was his childhood escape into nature and the outdoors.
"It was just fun shooting," he said, "you know whether it was a can or a bottle or something just place the target out and just no concern about the price of ammo, just shoot all you want and have fun."
Now he's starting a program so other kids will fall in love as well.
Big Country Youth Outdoors will center on teaching kids about gun safety.
It'll also be a way for families to trade their usual four walls for the outdoors.
"And hopefully they'll just fall in love with hunting and the outdoors in general like I did," said Udick.
The idea is starting to catch on.
"I thought it was a great idea to not forget about the kids and maybe teach them about the importance of being safe now so that later in life when they are around weapons or somebody that has a weapon they'll know how to respond and act," said Rick Barrett, a father of two who is helping Udick set up the program.
So while guns and ammo are disappearing faster than ever, Udick's dream isn't going anywhere.
Udick expects the first session to begin by the end of February.
He may be partnering with places like Abilene Indoor Gun Range to help provide a space for gun training.
