Cowgirls Struggle And Fall To Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas  - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team shot just 21.7 percent and lost 55-39 to Texas Lutheran in American Southwest Conference action at Memorial Gym in Seguin on Thursday evening.
 
The Cowgirls did not make a field goal until Shelby Hanna's layup with 8:12 to play in the half. Fortunately, the Cowgirls' defense kept them in the game in the first half and trailed just 9-5 after Hanna's basket.
 
Both teams shots just 17.2 percent in the first half on 5-29 shooting and the game was tied at 16 at halftime. HSU never led in the first half but scored first in the second half to take its first lead of the game.
 
The teams then went back-and-forth and were tied at 29 with 11:48 to play. TLU then went on a 7-0 run to take a 36-29 lead and the Cowgirls were never closer than five points the rest of the game.
 
Joanna Daniel was the only Cowgirl in double figures with 10 points. Alexis Popelar had just four points to snap her 28-game double-digit scoring streak. She finished three games short of Donna Roberts' school record of 31.
 
Katy Scott and Chasmin Betters had 16 points each to lead Texas Lutheran.
 
HSU is now 13-11 on the year and 11-7 in ASC action. The Cowgirls will be the third seed out of the ASC West in next weekend's ASC Championship. HSU will close the regular season on Saturday at Schreiner in a 1 p.m. game.
 
The game against TLU was the final one as an ASC member for the Bulldogs. They will go to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference next season. TLU finished the year 8-17 overall and 6-13 in league play.
