The new buffalo-shaped weather vanes at Frontier Texas are up and ready for the reopening when renovations are completed next month. Local crews hoisted the herd of buffalo by a crane today.

8 huge buffalo, with their noses always pointing the direction of the wind, will greet guests as they return to Frontier Texas. Executive Director Jeff Salmon says that using buffalo was a no-brainer. "This property was a buffalo bone yard. When Abilene was founded it's where people brought buffalo bones to sell and put them on the train to ship off." says Salmon. What wasn't a no-brainer was coming up with the design and implementing the new display.

The buffalo themselves are at least 1,100 pounds, 7 ft. tall and 14 ft. long and the poles they stand on are 35 ft. high. They are all independently wired for lights. The display is being called the world's largest weather vane. Frontier Texas will re-open on March 2nd.
